BYD Opens Registrations of Interest for the Atto 3 EVO

Published:

BYD is taking names for the Atto 3 EVO before an imminent Australian release. The most reworked Atto 3 since it landed here in 2022 swaps front-wheel drive for a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, doubles down on battery size, and cuts charging times by more than half.

BYD Australia has opened Registrations of Interest for the Atto 3 EVO, the biggest overhaul its compact SUV has had since the nameplate landed here in February 2022. The new page at bydautomotive.com.au is asking interested buyers to register their interest but an Australian price, colour range or final spec sheet has yet to be revealed.

Federal approval documents already cover both drivetrains BYD plans to bring here and the brand’s own executives have pointed to the second half of 2026 for local showrooms. What’s on the landing page now is a taste of what’s coming: a bigger battery, proper all-wheel drive for the first time on this nameplate, and charging speeds that make it a compelling offering in 2026.

Battery and motors jump up a class

In the UK the Atto 3 EVO drops the old 49.9kWh and 60.5kWh battery options for a single 74.8kWh LFP Blade Battery pack across the range. BYD’s UK arm, which already sells the car as the Design (RWD) and Excellence (AWD), quotes a WLTP range of up to 510km for the single-motor version and 470km for the dual-motor flagship.

Power climbs with it. The rear-drive version makes 230kW and 380Nm, enough for a 5.5 second sprint to 100km/h from a front-driven car that used to take 7.3 seconds in its quickest current form. The all-wheel-drive Excellence adds a second motor up front for 330kW combined and 560Nm, dropping the 0-100km/h time to 3.9 seconds. That’s proper hot-hatch pace from a compact family SUV, a first for the Atto 3 badge.

Charging is where the gap over the outgoing car is widest. The EVO’s 800-volt architecture supports 220kW DC charging, more than double the 88kW ceiling on the current Premium and more than triple the 70kW of the entry-level Essential. BYD claims a 10-80% top-up in 25 minutes.

Figures reflect the UK-spec Atto 3 EVO that has been on sale there since April. Power outputs match the drivetrains already approved for Australia. Local pricing, range and equipment are yet to be confirmed by BYD Australia.

Cabin and tech step up as well

The 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen carries over, but BYD has grown the digital driver’s display and built Google’s software directly into the infotainment system rather than relying on CarPlay or Android Auto alone. The gear selector moves from the centre console to a stalk on the steering column, a change that’s freed up a properly usable storage bay where the shifter used to sit.

Boot space grows by 50 litres to 490 litres thanks to repackaging around the new battery, and there’s a small frunk under the bonnet for charging cables. The quirky interior details are still there too: door trim styled like guitar strings, rotary door handles, and vent surrounds unlike anything else in the segment.

Not to be confused with China’s new Atto 3

BYD launched an entirely different third-generation Atto 3 in China in May, sold locally there as the Yuan Plus. It runs the all new Blade Battery 2.0 pack, and is flash charging capable being able to charge from 10-70% in around five minutes.

New Zealand is expected to get the CDM Flash Charging Atto 3 option in 2027, but it will be introduced as a completely new line, to be badged there as the Atto 5 rather than Atto 3. What’s coming to Australia this year is the mid-cycle update already on sale in the UK and parts of Europe as the Atto 3 EVO. It’s a smaller technical jump than the CDM Atto 3, but still the most substantial update this generation of Atto 3 has seen.

Federal approval is sorted: timing points to late 2026

The rear and all-wheel-drive Atto 3 EVO variants have already cleared Australian Government approval, covering the same 230kW and 330kW outputs sold overseas. BYD Australia confirmed at its Shark 6 Performance media launch in May that two new models and two updated models are locked in for the back half of 2026, and it appears the Atto 3 EVO is one of those updates.

The segment has grown teeth since 2022

The current Atto 3 has done solid work for BYD, just shy of 22,000 local sales since launch and still Australia’s sixth-best-selling EV in 2025 on 3,861 deliveries. That’s down from 5,751 the year before and lately it’s BYD’s cheaper Atto 2 cracking the monthly top ten, not the Atto 3.

BYD hasn’t put a dollar figure on the EVO. But I would expect the RWD from somewhere in the low $40,000s before on-road costs, with AWD higher again, though that’s all just guesswork rather than anything BYD has confirmed. But that landscape has changed significantly since this Atto 3 arrived on the scene back in 2022 where it was essentially the only player in the game at the time. Now in 2026, when it arrives it will be competing against the likes of the Geely EX5, Jaecoo J5, Chery E5, MG S5 and Lepamotor B10. So dare I say it, could it perhaps even come in at the same starting price as the current BYD Atto 3 Essential, starting at under $40,000?

BYD posted 18,881 sales in June, its best month on Australian record and just 243 units shy of knocking Toyota off top spot in the country’s biggest ever new-car month. The Atto 3 EVO arrives into a market where the brand has never had more momentum behind it, and a segment that’s never had more reason to watch how it prices the car.

Registrations of Interest are open now at bydautomotive.com.au. Local pricing and specification are expected closer to launch in the second half of 2026.
