Australia’s most affordable electric SUV has arrived. The GWM ORA 5 SUV is now clearing ports and heading to dealers.
First shipments of the GWM ORA 5 SUV have arrived at Australian Eastern seaboard ports, with stock set to hit dealerships within days. Nearly 3,000 expressions of interest have already been recorded across GWM’s 127-strong dealer network since the ORA 5’s reveal at the Melbourne Motor Show in April.
The ORA 5 SUV’s class-leading technology and segment-leading pricing is a statement of GWM’s intent to Drive to Top 5 in the EV segment across the ANZ region.

A Bigger ORA
The ORA 5 is a proper SUV, not a stretched hatch. It measures 4,471mm long on a 2,720mm wheelbase, putting it in the same physical territory as the BYD Atto 3. Boot space sits at 362 litres with 60/40-split folding rear seats. The outgoing ORA hatch managed 228 litres.
The LFP battery is sourced from SVOLT, a GWM-affiliated cell manufacturer. At 58.3kWh it returns a WLTC range claim of 430km and supports DC fast charging at up to 120kW, covering 30 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes. V2L capability at 6kW is standard across both variants.
The powertrain is front-wheel drive only. One motor, one battery, one range figure between both variant options.
Where It Sits in the Segment
At $33,990 driveaway, the ORA 5 Lux undercuts the Jaecoo J5 EV and lands below most driveaway configurations of the BYD Atto 2. The Chery E5 starts at $36,990 before on-roads. On pure price, the ORA 5 Lux is the cheapest electric SUV in Australia outside the Northern Territory.
The ORA 5 replaces the ORA hatchback, which is now heading into runout and will be discontinued. The pricing is identical to what the hatch cost, which means buyers are getting meaningfully more vehicle for the same money. A novated lease also makes sense here: anything under $90,000 remains FBT-exempt.
GWM’s EV Ambitions
GWM currently sits as Australia’s third-biggest PHEV brand and fourth-biggest for hybrid year-to-date per VFACTS data. The Ora 5 is the first step in a broader EV expansion, with additional ORA models slated for 2026 and into 2027. The brand’s “Drive to Top 5” target now extends explicitly to the EV segment.
Test drives are available now through GWM’s dealer network. First deliveries are expected within days.
